Uncial Calligraphy Workshop (Beginner Level)
with
Ward Dunham & Linnea Lundquist of Atelier Gargoyle
Friday
morning, 9 am to 1 pm.
This workshop will introduce students to
calligraphy, and writing “roman uncial” letterforms with the chisel-edged dip
pen. Uncial is a majuscule (all cap) script that was commonly in use as early
as the 3rd century by Latin and Greek scribes, and is still in use today for
“display” lettering and typography. Formal Roman Capitals, though stately and
elegant, are very difficult to render with a chisel-edged pen (aka “italic”
nib). But Uncial is about as simple as it gets! Uncial caps are Roman caps
altered and simplified in favor of the chisel-edge pen. Uncial is characterized
by round & pen-friendly strokes that are pleasing to the eye. It’s a
satisfying style for the beginner to start with, and over time can be developed
with expression and elegance. Class includes demonstrations by the teachers,
practice work by the students, and one-on-one critiques. The cost is $35 for the
class, plus $5 for materials. Materials include: 1 dip pen nib (5mm Brause)
& pen holder, paper, small bottle of sepia ink, exemplars. (Please note: we
will NOT be using fountain pens, markers, or pointed flexible nibs).
Uncial Calligraphy Workshop (Intermediate Level)
with
Ward Dunham & Linnea Lundquist of Atelier Gargoyle
Friday
afternoon, 2 pm to 6 pm.
Uncial is a majuscule (all cap) script,
characterized by round & pen-friendly strokes that are pleasing to the eye.
It’s a satisfying style to add to the repertoire of an intermediate-level
calligrapher. If you’ve studied uncial before, here’s a good opportunity to
work on developing expression, elegance, and panache. It’s also a chance to
observe the technique of master scribe Ward Dunham, who has been wielding both
chisel-edged dip pens and italic-nibbed fountain pens for more than 40 years.
Class includes demonstrations by the teachers, practice work by the students,
and one-on-one critiques. The cost is $35 for the class, plus $5 for materials.
Materials include: 1 dip pen nib (5 mm Brause) & pen holder, paper, small
bottle of sepia ink, exemplars. Intermediate level students are welcome to
bring their own tools.
